Virginiamycin M1 is a macrocyclic lactone antibiotic belonging to the streptogramin A group. It is produced by Streptomyces virginiae and related species. Virginiamycin M1 acts by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis at the level of aminoacyl-tRNA binding and peptide bond formation on the 50S ribosomal subunit. This action blocks translation and results in bacteriostatic effects; when combined with Virginiamycin S1 (a streptogramin B), it produces synergistic bactericidal activity. Virginiamycin M1 is primarily used in veterinary medicine as part of virginiamycin mixtures to promote growth and prevent or treat infections in livestock such as cattle, swine, and poultry. It is also used industrially to control microbial contamination during bioethanol production[1][2][5][6][7]. Chemically modified forms of virginiamycins are used therapeutically in humans (e.g., quinupristin/dalfopristin).
