Virulizin is a biological immunotherapy agent derived from bovine bile, containing a complex mixture of proteins and other biological components. It acts as an immunomodulator by stimulating the activation of macrophages and inducing the release of various cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and interleukin-1 (IL-1). These actions are intended to enhance the body's natural immune response against malignant cells. Virulizin has been primarily evaluated in Phase 3 clinical trials for the treatment of advanced pancreatic cancer, typically in combination with standard chemotherapy such as gemcitabine. The drug was originally developed by Lorus Therapeutics (now Aptose Biosciences) before the rights were transferred to Zor Pharmaceuticals.
