Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Viscum album ethanolic extract is a preparation derived from the stems and leaves of the European mistletoe plant (Viscum album) using ethanol as the extraction solvent. This type of extract contains a range of bioactive compounds, including phenolics such as quercetin, rutin, catechins, caffeic acid, gallic acid, and chlorogenic acid[1]. The ethanol-based extraction yields a different phytochemical profile compared to aqueous extracts. Preclinical studies have demonstrated that viscum album ethanolic extracts possess antioxidant and antimicrobial properties[1][2], with significant free radical scavenging activity. In vitro and in vivo research suggests potential cytotoxic effects against various cancer cell lines and possible immunomodulatory actions[4]. Traditionally and experimentally, these extracts have been explored for complementary cancer therapy—especially in breast and gynecological cancers—as well as for cardiovascular indications (e.g., arrhythmia), CNS effects (sedative/anxiolytic/antidepressant), metabolic disorders like diabetes, inflammation, epilepsy/seizures, cosmetic applications (antiwrinkle/antimelanogenic), and food preservation due to their antimicrobial activity[2][3][4][5]. The mechanism of action is thought to involve both direct cytotoxicity on tumor cells via apoptosis induction pathways (including caspase activation) and modulation of immune responses; additional mechanisms may include inhibition of tyrosinase activity relevant for skin health/cosmetics[2][4][8].
