Overview
Mistletoe extract, derived from the Viscum album plant, is a botanical product investigated as a complementary therapy for cancer. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) sponsored a Phase I clinical trial evaluating the extract in combination with gemcitabine for patients with advanced solid tumors. [1] Mistletoe extract is believed to exert its effects through multiple mechanisms, including immunomodulation, induction of apoptosis (programmed cell death) in cancer cells, and direct cytotoxicity. [2, 3] Studies suggest it can improve the quality of life and reduce the adverse effects of chemotherapy in patients with various cancers, such as breast, ovarian, and non-small cell lung cancer. [3] Preparations are not standardized across manufacturers and can vary based on the host tree, time of harvest, and extraction process. [9]
