Overview

Viscum album lipophilic extract (VALE) is a topical botanical drug derived from European mistletoe (*Viscum album* L.), specifically formulated as a 10% resin cream. Developed by researchers at the Universität Witten/Herdecke and manufactured by Iscador AG, it contains pharmacologically active pentacyclic triterpenes, including oleanolic acid, betulinic acid, and ursolic acid. These components exert antitumor, immunomodulatory, and anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting tumor cell growth and inducing apoptosis. The drug is primarily investigated for the treatment of non-melanoma skin cancers and precancerous lesions, such as actinic keratosis, cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma, and basal cell carcinoma.
