Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The Vistakon bimatoprost-releasing contact lens is a sustained-release drug delivery system developed for the treatment of open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension. It consists of a hydrophilic contact lens platform designed to provide controlled release of bimatoprost, a prostaglandin analog, directly to the ocular surface. Bimatoprost acts as an agonist at the prostanoid FP receptor, which increases the outflow of aqueous humor through both the trabecular meshwork and uveoscleral pathways, thereby reducing intraocular pressure (IOP). This delivery method was intended to improve patient adherence compared to daily eye drops. However, clinical development, including a Phase 2 trial (NCT01016691), was discontinued after the device failed to demonstrate superior IOP lowering compared to placebo.
