Overview

VISTASEAL is a fibrin sealant (human) indicated as an adjunct to hemostasis for mild to moderate bleeding in adults undergoing surgery when control of bleeding by standard surgical techniques (such as suture, ligature, and cautery) is ineffective or impractical. It is effective in heparinized patients. The product consists of two plasma-derived proteins—human fibrinogen and human thrombin—which are combined at the time of application using a dual applicator device. When applied topically, these components interact to form a stable cross-linked fibrin clot at the site of bleeding, mimicking the final steps of physiological coagulation and promoting rapid hemostasis. VISTASEAL can be used in both open and minimally invasive procedures via drip or spray application without requiring gas assistance. It was developed by Grifols and licensed to Ethicon for commercialization[1][3][5][7][8].
