Overview

Vitagel is an FDA-approved surgical hemostat and combination product designed to facilitate hemostasis and tissue healing across various surgical specialties, including orthopedic, cardiac, and general surgery. The product is a composite of bovine microfibrillar collagen and bovine thrombin, which are mixed at the point of care with a small volume of the patient's own plasma (autologous plasma). Upon application to a bleeding site, usually via a spray device, the thrombin reacts with the fibrinogen in the plasma to form a fibrin-collagen gel matrix. This matrix incorporates the patient's activated platelets and adheres to the tissue, providing a physical scaffold for clot formation and subsequent wound healing. Vitagel is typically resorbed by the body within 30 days. It was originally developed as CoStasis before being rebranded and marketed as Vitagel.
