Overview

Vitamin B 12 factor IIIm is a synthetic analog of vitamin B12 (cobalamin) in which the lower axial ligand (the base attached to the cobalt atom) is a 5-methoxybenzimidazole group instead of the more common dimethylbenzimidazole found in naturally occurring cobalamins. It is also known as cyano-5-methoxybenzimidazolylcobamide. This compound belongs to the broader class of cobalamins and shares their core structure and biological relevance as cofactors in enzymatic reactions involving methyl group transfers and rearrangements. However, Vitamin B 12 factor IIIm itself is considered experimental and has not been approved for clinical use or supplementation[1][3]. Its mechanism of action would be expected to parallel that of other cobalamins—serving as a cofactor for enzymes such as methionine synthase and methylmalonyl-CoA mutase—but its altered lower ligand may affect its binding properties or bioavailability compared to standard forms like cyanocobalamin or methylcobalamin.
