Overview

A combination of vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) and vitamin C (ascorbic acid) investigated as an adjunctive antioxidant therapy for the treatment of schizophrenia and related psychotic disorders. Developed in the context of a clinical trial by Oslo University Hospital, Aker, the treatment aims to address abnormalities in membrane lipids and redox regulation hypothesized to contribute to the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Vitamin E acts as a lipid-soluble antioxidant, while Vitamin C is a water-soluble antioxidant that also helps regenerate Vitamin E. In the 'EPA and Antioxidants in Schizophrenia' study, it was administered alongside antipsychotics and sometimes ethyl-eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA).
