Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Vitamin K1 drops (containing phytomenadione) are an oral formulation of vitamin K1 developed by Beijing Boya United Pharmaceutical Research Institute and manufactured by Zhejiang Qianyuan Hailisheng Pharmaceutical. It is approved in China for the prevention of vitamin K deficiency bleeding (VKDB) in infants, including healthy term newborns and breastfed infants. Phytomenadione acts as an essential cofactor for the enzyme gamma-glutamyl carboxylase (GGCX), which catalyzes the post-translational gamma-carboxylation of glutamate residues on coagulation factors II (prothrombin), VII, IX, and X, as well as anticoagulant proteins C and S. This modification is critical for these proteins to bind calcium and function properly in the coagulation cascade, thereby preventing hemorrhagic disorders.
