Overview

Vitespen is an autologous cancer vaccine derived from a patient’s own tumor tissue. It consists of purified heat shock protein gp96 (also known as endoplasmin) complexed with peptides from the patient’s tumor. The mechanism of action involves the presentation of these tumor-specific antigens to the immune system via dendritic cells; this stimulates a T-cell-mediated immune response against residual or recurrent cancer cells. Vitespen is designed as a personalized immunotherapy and has been investigated primarily for renal cell carcinoma and glioma but also in other cancers such as melanoma and colorectal cancer. Developed by Agenus (formerly Antigenics), it was approved in Russia for early-stage kidney cancer but did not receive approval in the US or EU[1][2][3][4][5][6].
