Vitex agnus-castus is a plant native to the Mediterranean region and is commonly known as chaste tree or chasteberry. The fruit extract of this plant is widely used as an herbal supplement for managing symptoms related to the menstrual cycle such as premenstrual syndrome (PMS), cyclic mastalgia (breast pain), irregular menstrual periods, menopause symptoms, and sometimes infertility and polycystic ovary syndrome. Its primary mechanism appears to be modulation of pituitary hormones by decreasing prolactin levels through dopaminergic effects on dopamine D2 receptors in the anterior pituitary gland. This hormonal effect helps rebalance estrogen and progesterone levels in women[3][4][7]. While some clinical studies suggest efficacy for PMS symptom relief and breast pain reduction[4], evidence for other uses remains limited or inconclusive.
