Vitex doniana aqueous leaf extract is a natural product research compound derived from the leaves of the *Vitex doniana* Sweet tree (commonly known as black plum), which is native to various regions in Africa. This water-based extract is primarily utilized in ethnopharmacological research and traditional medicine rather than as a commercially developed pharmaceutical. It contains a diverse array of phytochemicals, including saponins, tannins, flavonoids, terpenoids, and alkaloids. Preclinical studies have investigated its therapeutic potential across several indications, most notably as an antidiabetic agent through the inhibition of alpha-amylase and alpha-glucosidase enzymes, and as an antioxidant. More recent research has explored its cytotoxic and antiproliferative effects against cervical cancer cell lines (HeLa), where it appears to modulate the expression of cancer-associated genes such as BCL-2, TP53, and the androgen receptor, although it typically shows lower potency in oncology models compared to organic solvent extracts like dichloromethane.
