Overview

VitrenAse (also known as VIT100) is an antiproliferative biologic drug — specifically a chimeric ribozyme — developed by Immusol for the prevention of recurrent proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) in patients undergoing retinal reattachment surgery. The drug acts by targeting and cleaving the mRNA of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), a protein essential for DNA replication and cell proliferation, thereby halting the growth of PVR membranes and the formation of scar tissue. Although evaluated in a multicenter, randomized, double-masked, placebo-controlled Phase I/II clinical trial, VitrenAse failed to demonstrate a statistically significant benefit in preventing recurrent retinal detachment secondary to PVR, leading to the discontinuation of its clinical development.
