Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Vitreo Lutein is a lutein-based vital dye used for the visualization of the vitreous body during pars plana vitrectomy (PPV). Manufactured by Alfa Instruments under the VitreoCare brand, it contains 2% highly purified crystalline lutein extracted from Marigold flowers. The dye selectively stains the vitreous fibrils and posterior hyaloid, allowing surgeons to clearly identify and remove them during procedures such as those for idiopathic epiretinal membrane (ERM). It is considered a safer alternative to triamcinolone acetonide-based formulations and provides additional benefits including blue light filtering and antioxidant/neuroprotective effects due to the natural properties of lutein. The product is designed to avoid interaction with the membranes at the vitreous-retinal interface, ensuring selective staining of the intended structures.
