Overview

Vitreoscilla filiformis emollient refers to topical skin care products containing lysate or extract from the bacterium Vitreoscilla filiformis. These preparations are considered non-replicative probiotic fractions and are used as industrial raw materials in many cosmetic and dermatological formulations[1][3]. The mechanism of action is thought to mimic that of probiotics in the gut—regulating immunity, protecting and repairing the skin barrier, modulating inflammation, stimulating innate cutaneous defenses (including antioxidant and antimicrobial pathways), rebalancing the skin microbiome (notably by reducing Staphylococcus aureus overgrowth), and improving symptoms of inflammatory skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis[1][2][3][4]. Clinical studies have shown that these emollients can reduce pruritus, erythema, dryness, inflammatory lesions, improve sleep quality and daily discomfort in patients with atopic dermatitis or sensitive/dry skin[5][6]. The active ingredient is often referred to as Aqua Posae Filiformis (APF) when grown on thermal spring water-enriched medium[3][4].
