Overview

Vitreoscilla filiformis lysate is a **topical bacterial lysate/postbiotic** derived from the nonpathogenic gram-negative bacterium *Vitreoscilla filiformis*, developed primarily by L'Oréal and used in emollient-type dermatologic formulations for **atopic dermatitis** and xerosis-associated inflammatory skin disease. In clinical studies, a 5% topical cream or ointment containing the lysate improved atopic dermatitis severity scores, pruritus, sleep disturbance, transepidermal water loss, and reduced *Staphylococcus aureus* skin colonization. Mechanistically, the lysate appears to act as an **immunomodulatory microbiome-derived topical therapy**, with evidence supporting activation of **Toll-like receptor 2** signaling in skin immune cells, induction of **IL-10-producing dendritic cells** and regulatory T-cell responses, enhancement of endogenous antimicrobial and antioxidant defenses, and restoration of skin-barrier homeostasis rather than direct classic receptor pharmacology. It is best understood as a pharmaceutical/cosmeceutical active used in topical emollient-plus products rather than a conventional small-molecule drug.
