Overview

Vitreosolve is a small molecule, nonenzymatic agent developed for pharmacologic vitreolysis. Its primary mechanism involves disrupting the collagen-hyaluronan network within the vitreous body of the eye, leading to liquefaction of the gel and weakening of vitreo-retinal adhesions. This dual action facilitates posterior vitreous detachment (PVD), which can reduce traction on the retina and potentially prevent or treat conditions such as diabetic retinopathy and proliferative diabetic retinopathy. The active ingredient in Vitreosolve is urea, which "unravels" collagen fibers to induce both liquefaction and interface disruption. Developed by VitreoRetinal Technologies, Inc., Vitreosolve was evaluated in Phase 3 clinical trials as an adjunct to pars plana vitrectomy surgery and as a preventative treatment for diabetic retinopathy. Despite promising early safety data, development has been discontinued[1][2][3][8].
