VivaSens

VivaSens is a desensitizing varnish developed and manufactured by Ivoclar Vivadent for the treatment of dentin hypersensitivity. It is a topical dental product formulated as a clear lacquer based on ethanol, water, and hydroxypropyl cellulose, containing active ingredients such as potassium fluoride, polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate, and other methacrylates. VivaSens employs a synergistic mechanism of action: it forms a protective lacquer coating on the root surface to shield exposed tooth necks from external stimuli, while simultaneously blocking dentinal tubules through the precipitation of calcium ions and proteins within the dentinal fluid. The inclusion of potassium fluoride provides additional desensitizing benefits by potentially affecting nerve transmission. It is typically used in clinical settings to manage natural dental hypersensitivity and was recently evaluated in a 2024 randomized controlled clinical trial led by researcher Nourah Mulfi Aljasser.
