Overview

Vivaxin is a prophylactic vaccine candidate designed to prevent malaria caused by the *Plasmodium vivax* parasite. It is primarily being developed to address malaria in regions where this species is endemic, such as Brazil. The vaccine consists of recombinant proteins administered via intramuscular injection, intended to stimulate a robust and protective immune response, specifically targeting the parasite to prevent clinical disease. In a separate biological context, "Vivaxin" (or Fam34) also refers to a large gene family in the parasite *Trypanosoma vivax*, which causes animal African trypanosomiasis (AAT). This gene family encodes transmembrane glycoproteins that are highly immunogenic and are under investigation as potential veterinary vaccine candidates.
