Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Vivitrol 380mg (naltrexone for extended-release injectable suspension) is a once-monthly, long-acting formulation of the opioid receptor antagonist naltrexone. Developed by Alkermes using its proprietary Medisorb® microsphere drug delivery technology, Vivitrol is administered as a deep intramuscular gluteal injection. It is FDA-approved for the treatment of alcohol dependence in patients who can abstain from alcohol in an outpatient setting, and for the prevention of relapse to opioid dependence following opioid detoxification. By binding competitively to opioid receptors (primarily mu-opioid receptors) in the brain, naltrexone blocks the euphoric and reinforcing effects of both exogenous opioids and endogenous endorphins, thereby reducing cravings and preventing relapse.
