Overview

VK-28 is a brain-permeable *small molecule iron chelator* with a hydroxyquinoline backbone. Its mechanism of action is chelation of iron, which inhibits both basal and iron-induced mitochondrial membrane lipid peroxidation, thus decreasing oxidative stress and neurodegeneration. It has demonstrated neuroprotective effects in animal models of Parkinson’s disease and intracerebral hemorrhage, offering protection against dopaminergic lesions and reducing iron-induced cell death and reactive oxygen species production. VK-28’s efficacy is comparable to the iron chelator desferal (deferoxamine), but unlike desferal, VK-28 crosses the blood-brain barrier, making it relevant for neurological indications such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, Friedreich ataxia, aceruloplasminemia, and Hallervorden-Spatz syndrome[1][2].
