VLA15 is an investigational multivalent recombinant protein subunit vaccine developed for the prevention of Lyme disease. It targets the outer surface protein A (OspA) of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato species—the bacteria responsible for causing Lyme disease. OspA is expressed by the bacteria when present in a tick; blocking OspA inhibits the bacterium’s ability to leave the tick and infect humans. VLA15 covers six of the most prevalent OspA serotypes found in North America and Europe. The vaccine is alum-adjuvanted and administered intramuscularly. Clinical trials have demonstrated strong immunogenicity and a favorable safety profile across adults and children aged 5 years or older. As of 2024, it is in Phase 3 clinical development with no approved human vaccines for Lyme disease currently available[1][2][3][4][5][6][8].
