VLA15 + alum is a combination of the investigational Lyme disease vaccine candidate VLA15 formulated with the adjuvant alum (aluminum hydroxide). VLA15 is a multivalent protein subunit vaccine that targets the outer surface protein A (OspA) of Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacterium responsible for Lyme disease. The vaccine covers six prevalent OspA serotypes found in North America and Europe. Alum is included as an adjuvant to enhance immunogenicity. The mechanism of action involves inducing antibodies against OspA, which block the bacterium’s ability to leave ticks and infect humans. Developed by Valneva in partnership with Pfizer, this formulation has demonstrated strong immunogenicity and a favorable safety profile across multiple age groups in clinical trials up to Phase 3[1][4][5][6][7][8].
