Overview

VLA1601 is a highly purified, inactivated whole-virus vaccine candidate designed to prevent Zika virus infection. Developed through a collaboration between Valneva and Emergent BioSolutions, the vaccine utilizes Valneva's established Vero-cell expression platform, which is also used for their commercial Japanese encephalitis vaccine. It is typically formulated with aluminum hydroxide (alum) as an adjuvant to enhance immunogenicity, though other adjuvants like CpG1018 and 3M-052 have been explored in clinical trials. The vaccine is specifically designed to address the safety concerns associated with live-attenuated vaccines, particularly for women of childbearing age, by using an inactivated virus approach. Clinical development has progressed through Phase 1 trials, demonstrating positive safety and immunogenicity profiles in healthy flavivirus-naïve adults.
