VLA1701 is an investigational, oral, inactivated combination vaccine developed by Valneva for the prevention of cholera and diarrhea caused by enterotoxigenic *Escherichia coli* (ETEC). The vaccine is designed to provide dual protection against *Vibrio cholerae* and ETEC, which are major causes of travelers' diarrhea and endemic diarrheal disease in low-resource settings. VLA1701 builds upon the technology of the licensed cholera vaccine Dukoral, typically consisting of killed *Vibrio cholerae* O1 bacteria and a recombinant cholera toxin B subunit (rCTB). Because the heat-labile toxin (LT) produced by ETEC is immunologically and structurally similar to the cholera toxin B subunit, the vaccine induces cross-protective mucosal immunity against both pathogens. It is currently being evaluated in Phase II clinical trials, including human challenge models, to confirm its safety and efficacy.
