VLP-IL-5 is a virus-like particle (VLP) based conjugate vaccine developed by Saiba Biotech, specifically designed to treat insect bite hypersensitivity (IBH), also known as sweet itch, in horses. The vaccine utilizes VLP technology to present the self-antigen Interleukin-5 (IL-5) in a highly repetitive and organized manner, which effectively overcomes B-cell tolerance to induce the production of neutralizing antibodies. IL-5 is a key cytokine responsible for the differentiation, recruitment, and activation of eosinophils, which are the primary effector cells in the allergic inflammatory response of IBH. By neutralizing endogenous IL-5, the vaccine reduces eosinophil-driven pathology and alleviates clinical symptoms. The program is being developed in collaboration with several academic institutions, including the University of Zurich and the University of Oxford.
