VLPCOV-02 is a self-amplifying RNA (saRNA) vaccine candidate developed by VLP Therapeutics (also known as VLP The Vaccines Company) for the prevention of COVID-19. It is designed as a 'universal' vaccine intended to provide broad protection against multiple SARS-CoV-2 variants. The vaccine utilizes a lipid nanoparticle (LNP) delivery system to transport saRNA that encodes a redesigned receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, incorporating a pan-HLA-binding epitope to enhance immunogenicity. Additionally, the saRNA features a modified base, 5-methylcytosine, which is intended to reduce reactogenicity and improve the immune response. As of late 2025, the candidate is reported to be in the Preclinical/CMC stage of development for its universal application.
