VM-GD is a plasmid DNA vaccine developed by Helixmith (formerly ViroMed) for the treatment of Graves' disease. The therapeutic consists of a plasmid vector encoding the A-subunit of the human thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor (TSHR). Its mechanism of action involves inducing immune tolerance to TSHR, thereby reducing the production of pathogenic autoantibodies (thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulins) that cause hyperthyroidism. By addressing the underlying autoimmune cause of the disease, VM-GD aims to provide a long-term solution compared to standard antithyroid medications or ablative therapies.
