Overview

VM-PSY-004 is a small molecule drug candidate being developed by VivaMed BioPharma for the treatment of Tobacco Use Disorder (smoking cessation). Currently in Phase 2 clinical development, VM-PSY-004 is a proprietary formulation of cytisine, a plant-derived alkaloid. It functions as a selective partial agonist of the alpha-4 beta-2 (α4β2) nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the brain. By binding to these receptors, VM-PSY-004 helps to mitigate the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal and reduces the reinforcing effects of nicotine by partially blocking its ability to stimulate the mesolimbic dopamine system. This mechanism is similar to that of varenicline, providing a therapeutic pathway to assist individuals in quitting tobacco use.
