Overview

Voglibose is a small molecule oral antidiabetic drug classified as an alpha-glucosidase inhibitor. It is used to manage postprandial blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. By competitively inhibiting intestinal alpha-glucosidase enzymes located in the brush border of the small intestine, voglibose delays the hydrolysis of oligosaccharides and disaccharides into absorbable monosaccharides such as glucose. This action reduces the rate of carbohydrate digestion and absorption, thereby preventing sharp increases in blood sugar after meals. Voglibose was discovered by Takeda Pharmaceutical Company in Japan in 1981 and first approved there in 1994 under the brand name Basen[1][2][3][7].
