Overview

Volagidemab is a fully human immunoglobulin G2 (IgG2) monoclonal antibody that acts as an antagonist of the human glucagon receptor (GCGR). By specifically binding to and blocking GCGR signaling, volagidemab inhibits the action of glucagon. This mechanism reduces hepatic glucose production by decreasing glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis while increasing hepatic glucose uptake and glycogen synthesis, ultimately lowering blood glucose levels. Volagidemab is being developed primarily for the treatment of type 1 diabetes mellitus as an adjunct to insulin therapy and has also been investigated for type 2 diabetes mellitus. The drug was originally developed by Amgen and further developed by REMD Biotherapeutics[1][3][4][5][6].
