Volinanserin is a highly selective serotonin 5-HT2A receptor antagonist developed as a small molecule drug. It was primarily investigated for its potential as an antipsychotic and antidepressant and for the treatment of insomnia. Volinanserin exhibits high selectivity for the 5-HT2A receptor with minimal affinity for dopamine or other serotonergic receptors. It has been widely used in scientific research to probe the function of the 5-HT2A receptor and to study mechanisms underlying psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia. Although it reached phase III clinical trials for chronic schizophrenia and was also studied in sleep maintenance insomnia and other neuropsychiatric conditions (including autism spectrum disorder and ADHD), development was discontinued before marketing due to insufficient efficacy data or strategic reasons[1][3][7][9].
