Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Voltaren gel (diclofenac sodium topical gel, 1%) is a topical nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) indicated for the relief of arthritis pain, specifically osteoarthritis in joints amenable to topical treatment such as the hands, wrists, elbows, knees, ankles, and feet. Developed by GSK and now marketed by Haleon, the product utilizes a proprietary Emulgel formulation that combines the properties of a gel and a cream to facilitate the penetration of diclofenac through the skin to the site of inflammation. It works by inhibiting the cyclooxygenase enzymes (COX-1 and COX-2), which are responsible for the production of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins. Originally a prescription-only medication, Voltaren gel received FDA approval for over-the-counter (OTC) use in 2020, making it the first prescription-strength topical NSAID available without a prescription in the United States.
