Overview

Voltaren Ophtha CD is an ophthalmic formulation of diclofenac sodium 0.1% containing hydroxypropyl gamma-cyclodextrin (HPγ-CD) as an excipient to enhance solubility, stability, and ocular tolerability. Developed by Novartis (and its ophthalmic division Alcon), this non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) works by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, thereby reducing prostaglandin synthesis and ocular inflammation. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of postoperative ocular inflammation and pain following cataract surgery, as well as the prevention of macular edema. In clinical trials, such as a Phase 4 study by UZ Leuven, Voltaren Ophtha CD has been evaluated alongside other preserved and preservative-free formulations to assess outcomes related to postoperative inflammation, iatrogenic dry eye disease, and macular edema.
