Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Volulyte** is a Fresenius Kabi intravenous balanced-colloid plasma volume expander containing 6% hydroxyethyl starch 130/0.4, a synthetic starch polymer derived from waxy maize, in an isotonic balanced electrolyte solution. The product increases intravascular oncotic volume by retaining fluid within the circulation and is used for volume replacement in hypovolemia due to acute blood loss when crystalloids alone are insufficient. Its electrolyte vehicle contains sodium, potassium, magnesium, chloride, and acetate; acetate acts as a bicarbonate precursor and the formulation has a lower chloride load than saline-based HES products. Volulyte has been evaluated in trauma, elective abdominal surgery, major burns, and cardiac surgery. Hydroxyethyl starch products have important safety restrictions, including avoidance in critically ill patients and patients with sepsis because of increased risks of mortality and renal replacement therapy.
