Overview

Voriconazole + micafungin is a combination of two antifungal agents used primarily in the management of invasive fungal infections, particularly those caused by Aspergillus and Candida species. Voriconazole is a triazole antifungal that inhibits fungal cytochrome P450-dependent 14α-lanosterol demethylation, disrupting ergosterol synthesis and compromising cell membrane integrity. Micafungin is an echinocandin that inhibits (1,3)-β-D-glucan synthase, thereby blocking the synthesis of an essential component of the fungal cell wall. The combination has demonstrated synergistic or additive effects against certain filamentous fungi (notably Aspergillus fumigatus) in vitro and may be considered as salvage or add-on therapy for invasive aspergillosis or refractory cases[1][2][4]. Both drugs are administered intravenously and have distinct but complementary mechanisms targeting different aspects of fungal biology.
