Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Vortioxetine is a novel antidepressant classified as a serotonin modulator and stimulator (SMS). It acts through multiple mechanisms on the serotonergic system. Vortioxetine is a potent inhibitor of the serotonin transporter (SERT), thereby increasing synaptic serotonin levels. Additionally, it functions as an antagonist at 5-HT3, 5-HT7, and 5-HT1D receptors; a partial agonist at 5-HT1B receptors; and an agonist at 5-HT1A receptors. This multimodal action is thought to contribute to its antidepressant effects and its ability to improve cognitive symptoms in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). The drug is administered orally and has demonstrated efficacy in adults with depression who have not responded adequately to other antidepressants such as SSRIs or SNRIs[1][2][3][4][8]. Vortioxetine was developed by Lundbeck in collaboration with Takeda.
