Overview
VoSpire ER is an oral extended-release formulation of albuterol sulfate (also known as salbutamol), a small molecule beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist. While it was originally FDA-approved and marketed for the treatment of bronchospasm in patients with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), it has since been discontinued for those indications by the manufacturer. Currently, the VA Office of Research and Development is investigating VoSpire ER in a Phase 4 clinical trial for a novel application: improving respiratory muscle strength and cough effectiveness in individuals with spinal cord injuries (SCI), specifically those with chronic tetraplegia and high paraplegia. The drug's mechanism involves the activation of beta-2 adrenergic receptors, which is hypothesized to enhance skeletal muscle contractility and respiratory function in this patient population.
