Overview

VPO-227 (formerly known as BPO-27) is a novel small molecule inhibitor of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) protein. It is being developed primarily for the treatment of secretory disorders characterized by excessive water secretion across epithelial surfaces, such as cholera and other forms of secretory diarrhea. By inhibiting CFTR-mediated chloride and water transport in the intestines, VPO-227 aims to reduce fluid loss associated with diseases like cholera. The drug has received Orphan Drug Designation from the FDA for cholera and is currently in early-stage clinical development. The originator was University of California at San Francisco; current development is led by Vanda Pharmaceuticals[2][4][5][8][9].
