VQW-765 is a small molecule, selective partial agonist of the alpha-7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α7 nAChR). Developed by Vanda Pharmaceuticals, it is being investigated as an "on-demand" oral treatment for acute anxiety associated with social anxiety disorder (SAD). Unlike traditional chronic treatments for SAD, VQW-765 is designed to be taken shortly before a stressful event, such as a public speaking task, to mitigate acute symptoms of anxiety. The alpha-7 nicotinic receptor is widely expressed in the central nervous system, particularly in regions involved in cognition and emotional regulation. Modulation of this receptor is thought to provide anxiolytic effects without the sedative or addictive properties typically associated with benzodiazepines, offering a novel mechanism for managing performance-related anxiety.
