Drug intelligence / Profile preview
VR004 is an inhaled dry powder formulation of apomorphine hydrochloride, a non-selective dopamine agonist, developed by Vectura Group for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. The drug is delivered to the lungs using the proprietary Aspirair dry powder inhaler, which facilitates rapid systemic absorption and a fast onset of action. Unlike phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5) inhibitors that act peripherally, apomorphine acts centrally in the brain, specifically on the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus, to trigger the erectile response. In Phase IIb clinical trials, VR004 demonstrated significant efficacy, with a majority of patients achieving erections suitable for intercourse within 5 to 10 minutes of dosing. Despite positive results, the program was discontinued after Vectura sought a commercial partner to progress the candidate into Phase III trials.
