VRC-EBODNA012-00-VP is a prophylactic DNA vaccine developed to protect against infection by the Ebola virus. It consists of a mixture of three plasmids encoding antigens from multiple strains of the Ebola virus, specifically including transmembrane-deleted glycoproteins (GP) from Zaire and Sudan ebolaviruses and nucleoprotein (NP) from Zaire ebolavirus. The vaccine is designed to stimulate both humoral and cellular immune responses, as demonstrated in Phase 1 clinical trials where it induced specific antibody production as well as CD4+ and CD8+ T-cell responses against the encoded antigens. The product cannot cause disease because it contains only non-replicating genetic material, not live or attenuated virus[2][7][8]. Developed by the National Institute of Allergy & Infectious Diseases (NIAID), this candidate was tested in healthy adult volunteers for safety and immunogenicity[2][7][8].
