Overview

VRC-EBODNA023-00-VP is a second-generation DNA vaccine developed as a prophylactic vaccine against Ebola virus infection. It consists of two closed-circular plasmids, each encoding the wild-type glycoprotein (GP) from two different Ebola virus species: Zaire ebolavirus and Sudan-Gulu ebolavirus. The vaccine is designed to induce an immune response by expressing these viral glycoproteins in the recipient, thereby stimulating protective immunity without containing any live or inactivated virus. The primary mechanism of action involves the inhibition of Ebola virus entry into host cells by generating antibodies targeting the viral glycoproteins. Developed by the Vaccine Research Center (VRC) at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), this candidate has undergone Phase 1 clinical trials to assess its safety and immunogenicity in healthy adults[5][7][8][9].
