Overview

VRC-HIVDNA006-00-VP is a multiclade HIV-1 DNA plasmid vaccine developed by the Vaccine Research Center (VRC) of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). The vaccine is composed of six DNA plasmids encoding HIV-1 proteins from multiple clades: three plasmids encode Env proteins from clades A, B, and C, and three plasmids encode Gag, Pol, and Nef proteins. When administered, the DNA plasmids enter host cells and express these viral antigens, which are then presented to the immune system to stimulate both cellular (T-cell) and humoral (B-cell) immunity. It was primarily evaluated in Phase I clinical trials for safety and immunogenicity in healthy, uninfected adults, often administered via a needle-free device (Biojector 2000).
