Overview

VRC-HIVDNA009-00-VP is a multiclade HIV-1 DNA plasmid vaccine developed by the Vaccine Research Center (VRC) of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). The vaccine is a mixture of four DNA plasmids: one encoding a Gag-Pol-Nef fusion protein from HIV-1 clade B, and three encoding modified Envelope (Env) glycoproteins from clades A, B, and C. These clades represent approximately 90% of new HIV infections globally. The vaccine is designed to elicit both humoral (antibody) and cellular (CD4+ and CD8+ T cell) immune responses against HIV. It has been evaluated in clinical trials as a standalone preventive vaccine, a therapeutic vaccine in HIV-infected individuals on antiretroviral therapy, and as a priming agent in prime-boost regimens, frequently followed by an adenoviral vector boost such as VRC-HIVADV014-00-VP.
