Overview

VRC-ZKADNA090-00-VP is a DNA vaccine developed by the Vaccine Research Center (VRC) at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) for the prevention of Zika virus infection. The vaccine consists of a single closed-circular DNA plasmid (VRC 5283) encoding the wild-type precursor membrane (prM) and envelope (E) proteins from the H/PF/2013 strain of Zika virus. It is designed to induce both cellular and humoral immune responses, leading to production of neutralizing antibodies against Zika virus. Clinical studies have demonstrated that this vaccine elicits strong immunogenicity, with robust neutralizing antibody titers in animal models and humans, as well as protective effects against ZIKV-induced tissue damage in preclinical studies[5][6][9]. The vaccine is administered intramuscularly using a needle-free injection device[3][7].
