Overview

VRP-034 is a novel supramolecular cationic (SMC) formulation of polymyxin B sulphate developed by Venus Medicine Research Centre (VMRC), the R&D division of Venus Remedies Limited. It is designed to treat serious infections caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) Gram-negative bacteria, particularly bloodstream infections. The drug utilizes proprietary Renal Guard technology, which was developed using kidney-on-a-chip models to mitigate the dose-limiting nephrotoxicity typically associated with conventional polymyxin B therapy. Preclinical studies have demonstrated up to a 70% reduction in nephrotoxicity compared to marketed polymyxin B by reducing oxidative stress and renal cell injury while preserving the antibiotic's pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic profile. VRP-034 has received Qualified Infectious Disease Product (QIDP) designation from the US FDA.
