VS-TC is an adoptive T-cell therapy developed by the Istituto Giannina Gaslini for the treatment and prevention of refractory viral infections in immunocompromised patients, particularly those undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). The therapy consists of donor-derived T cells that are ex vivo stimulated and selected to recognize antigens from four common opportunistic viruses: Cytomegalovirus (CMV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), Adenovirus (AdV), and BK polyomavirus (BKV). By restoring protective cellular immunity, VS-TC aims to control viral replication and clear infections without inducing significant graft-versus-host disease (GvHD), as the alloreactive T-cell population is typically depleted or the virus-specific population is highly enriched during the manufacturing process. The product is often generated using automated systems like the CliniMACS Prodigy to ensure standardized production of the multi-specific T-cell population.
